Philip Gardner
Minister of Word, Sacrament and Pastoral Care, Melrose United Church
Currently the minister of Melrose United Church, Hamilton, Dr. Gardner is also a doctoral candidate in church history at Emmanuel College, University of Toronto. Born and raised in Hamilton, he was educated at McMaster University and the University of Toronto from which he obtained a doctorate in English Literature with a specialization in the poetry and culture of the Renaissance. Ordained following a lengthy career as a pastoral musician, he has served United Church congregations in St. Catharines and Hamilton. A passionate and eclectic life long learner, he has long been fascinated by the intersection of religion, art, and culture. His current project studies the mainline churches in Canada and their efforts to find a bridge over the troubled waters of the turbulent 1960s.
